Description
A rarely available set of 6 vintage (1980’s) C2 Directors chairs, designed and crafted by renowned furniture designer, David Colewell. David Colwell is one of the pioneers of sustainable design, creating timeless, nature-first furniture that addresses real issues for the future. Since the 1970s, David has specialised in the design and making of exceptional furniture and bespoke commissions focused on improving environmental performance, comfort and practicality. His furniture has won many awards and appears in permanent and private collections across Europe and America, including London’s V&A Museum and the Vitra Design Museum in Germany.”
These design-led chairs are constructed from solid ash with a thick, tan-coloured, leather seat. The clean lines and striking design have a contemporary Scandinavian aesthetic that suits a range of interior design styles. The technical innovation is its steam bent back which has a unique compound curve formed from solid ash, this gives the chair generous lumber support. It is retained by threaded wooden knobs which when loosened, allow it to fold. The seat is full grain hide, laced onto the frame and allows the back and front of the seat to be independently tensioned. The C2 is flexible, comfortable, very light and folds away easily.

Additional information
The C2 Directors Chair, designed by David Colewell in 1980/81, is a versatile upright folding chair which has been used for dining, meeting and conference rooms, museum seating, and luxury yachts. It is also an excellent chair from which to work. It has been specified as public seating for the Imperial War Museum and meeting room chairs for the Royal Fine Arts Commission for Scotland. Most recently they were selected by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre at Charring Cross Hospital.
The chairs are all in great structural condition, with a well-considered folding and unfolding mechanism that has stood the test of time. The leather seats show some signs of use and wear with a couple of them being more marked and scratched than the others. One of the leather seats has had a brass eyelet replaced, this is underneath the seat so it is not visible unless the chair is folded (see image). Please note (as can be seen on the images) that the leather on each chair has a varied amount of staining/marks and scratches. We consider this to be reflective of the chair’s history and feel that it adds some depth of character. There is also some colour variation in the hide.
