Description
Created just after completing her Post Graduate in Textile Art at Goldsmiths London. It is a pre study for one of her larger works.
The work comprises of mixed materials; canvas, cotton and paint, mounted on white board behind glass and a thin painted wood frame.
Description of the work from Jeanette Appleton is as follows.
“A series of doodles produced during the initial introduction to the different techniques seemed to suggest an inside: outside quality. The yurt seen at the Horniman museum gave both the physical and emotional structure to the idea. A nomad shelter made from materials sourced from outside to enclose a protective space, on land not owned but borrowed. Felt was a structure directly linked with the land and could be created responding directly to the body whether inside or outside.
On reflection the doodles revealed deep distant memories. From preschool age a daily circular walk to forage and explore in and out of ditches and hedges. From the secure home space childhood awareness of the outside world is pivotal to a person’s character and focus to future attitudes and decisions.
Requiring direct shapes and qualities of the yurt to continue ideas, a local barn gave a space to work outside to acknowledge the effect of its light inside. Evoking childhood memories playing inside Grandfathers barn, looking out to the adult world.”
Jeanette Appleton is an internationally recognised textile artist. She has worked on various projects and held several exhibitions, featured in various magazines and books with examples of her work in private and public collections in the UK and overseas.
